Relaxing the Body and Mind
The following notes are based on a Relaxing the Body and Mind Seminar at Salisbury University, MD from 4/1 to 4/3/2005, given by Dr. Joseph Di Giovanna, SUNY at Potsdam.Stress vs. Stressor
Stress is caused by Stressors. Stressors can be both internal and external. Some of the stressors can’t be gotten rid off. For example, if your boss at work causes your stress, she is there to stay no matter how much you wish her to go away. It is not good to react to stressors in a stressful way. It does not matter what causes stress. It is important to know how to deal with it.
1) Keep good postures for sitting and standing. Be mindful of a strange line between ears, middle of shoulders, knee and ankle. Use exercises, not posture, to correct posture.
2) Let it go. Relaxing techniques: move slowly, close eyes, and exhale.
3) Awareness. When stopping at traffic lights, don’t curse the lights, think about and adjust your posture.
4) Breathe through abdominal.
5) Indication of stress can cause actual stress.
6) Laugh.
7) Be Positive. Dwell on what you have, not what you don’t have.
